How do you get GIANT knots out of a cats hair??

We found a cat about 6 weeks ago and we put up signs, listed her online, went to four shelters and put in a found cat form and no one has claimed her yet. So we been taking care of her and my kids adore her and I was wondering if anyone knew how to get the knots out??? They are huge!!! I am afraid to cut them out.

Cutting them out may be the best way to get rid of them. Brushing might help some. Trim them a little at a time, then brush, then trim some more. Sometime the cats get so matted that they have to be shaved with one of those Wahl hair trimmers like the barber uses. Good luck.

1Step OneStart your cat's grooming regime when he's a kitten. Teaching kitty to sit still while you cut his claws and give him a bath will help to prepare him for getting his first trim. 2Step TwoTrim with the scissors first. Use scissors for all the places the trimmers can't get close enough to trim. 3Step ThreeUse the trimmers for the body of the cat from his neck to the base of his tail. Turn the trimmers on for a moment or two and watch kitty's reaction. If the knots/mats are big and close to the skin, DO NOT try and cut them out. Cats' skin is very thin and you are liable to cut it. Mats and knots are harmful because they are constantly pulling on the skin, which hurts and can eventually cause nerve damage. My advice is to take the cat to the groomer's to be clipped. If she's REALLY bad, take her to the vet to have her sedated and clipped. Needless to say, once her coat is knot-free, maintain it and brush her once a week to prevent future mats!

Cut them out. If you really don;t want ot try that, or if shes not going to hold still enough for it, try puttion corn or vegitable oil on it. I have horses and when their manes get knotted into huge knots this is the ONLY way I've been able to get it out sometimes. It will take time and patience though. Just dab some on the knots, it will make the hair slippery and make it easier to take them out. Good luck!
