My sis inlaw hubbys brothers wife got me a hair dryer for gift, i said oh i have 1 already was that

have been married 15 yrs, this was first birthday gift ever, from inlaws, when she gave it to me, she said oh it is ionic so its good for your hair, innocently i automatically replied oh i already have a hairdryer with that feature, she didnt seem offended, i just didnt want to keep something that i wouldnt be able to use, but she hasnt replaced it with anything, should she, i have been the one to purchase several gifts for her and her hubby, and put a lot of thought into their gifts, just recently for her hubby i framed pictures of him and my hubby when they were kids, and changed them to look like sketches, he seemed very pleased, so i now feel a little hurt that theres been nothing else in place of the one gift they did give me, my hubby doesnt seem to care either, and personally i would never buy a woman a hairdryer, its the one thing most woman have already, any opinions on this

No, u just let them know that u already have one already, but what u can do is keep it and u will have two, just in case one of them brakes or it blows up (lol.....), but I am serious, just tell them that u appreciate them getting u another one, tell them that it can come in handy if ur 1st one brakes or blows up.... later

Why cant you take it and exchange it for something you want?

Never make the mistake of thinking that everyone should or will think like you.

i think thats a little rude. Remember....its the thought that counts. In those situations its just better to smile and say thanks. But on the bright side, you have two hair dryers, one for regular use and a backup you can pack in a bag take on trips!

IT depends on the way you said it gifts are just not just gifts its the thought behind it you should of just accepted it and kept it she didnt have to know you didnt want it and if i was her i would never buy you another gift because its the thought behind the gift she didnt have to get you anything but she was nice enough to go out and get you something if i was you i would give her an apoligy and accept the gift back

Yes, your comment was rude...and if the givers wanted you to be able to exchange it they'd have included the reciept for you to do so. You can try to return it to a store that sells that same model, and get something else if you desire but a gift should be appreciated whether you already have one or not. Gifts shouldn't be expected in the first place...seems a bit materialistic.

How to put this delicately? I believe when you gift give, you should do it out of the kindness of your heart and never expect something back, that's the point of giving. If you are giving with the hopes that you'll get something in return, then you're doing sort of an "exchange" or purchase. The whole point of a gift is that there is no consideration attached.

To your question, when I first read it, I immediately assumed that it was a very young person writing it. You've been married for 15 years and got your first gift. Instead of feeling happy you actually got something, you're upset and actually wanted to offend her "thought" of getting you a hairdryer. Instead of thinking "wow, at least she thought of me" you thought "geez, who gives somebody a hairdryer and why didn't she get the hint that she should get me something I don't already have" because you're entitled due to the gifts you gave her husband (let's face it, they weren't for her, they were geared for her husband).

If this had been me, I would not only refuse to replace it, I would never get you anything again because the point of gift giving is feeling the joy it brings the other person. You shouldn't feel hurt at all. Maybe you wouldn't buy somebody a hairdryer, but you know what? You have no idea why she thought of giving you that gift. I've gifted electric toothbrushes because I felt they were the best thing to ever happen to my teeth (no cavities since I got one 10 years ago and compliments). Maybe she felt the same about finding the "ionic" hairdryer and wanted to share the greatness.

I would be offended if my friend returned the toothbrush and said "I already have one" in an nonchalant...errr...innocent tone. If, however, they had been happy about the gift and said "Oh, I just got one of these and LOVE it! thanks for the thought, but maybe somebody else will enjoy it more" then I'd happily take back the gift and think about an alternative later on. There's always the "re-gift" you do in private, which I have also done with some "unthoughtful" gifts. You say thank you very much, send a thank you card, and move on.

I think that you need to be the better person here. You should get your Thank-you stationary out, send her a card (even if you didn't keep the card). Just say, "I really appreciate the hairdryer you got me which was obviously thoughtful since I already have one. I hope you found somebody that would enjoy it." She could take it or leave it for what it's worth at that point.

Point is: You got a gift, you were an ingrate because you felt you deserved more, you need to thank her.

Yes it was rude, very rue, it may not have seemed like it but I'm sure you offended her! She was just trying to be nice to you%26amp;your hair!
