Okay guys, field trip to the San DIego Zoo with two kids, what do I do??

Okay, here's the low down. It's little man's 3rd birthday, and dad's old friend happens to be in San Diego, so Dad says to me, " Mom, let's go to San Diego for a few days." Like we're still childless and can leave on a whim.....crazy man. So anyway, I've been pulling my hair out finding a suitable and safe hotel for our two rugrats and us, so I've got that done. CHECK. Package deal with the Zoo tickets. CHECK. So, now, Dad says to me, let's shoot down to Tijuana and spend the day. OMG.....with my kids?? Okay, so honestly I don't know the first thing about TJ but I've been to Juarez many times and loved it. But with all the laws now, can my kids go, do I need a passport? Help!! Also any and all good tips on things to do in SD would be great, if they are toddler friendly.....We'll be there for three days, and I really want to enjoy it. Dad tells me that Mission Beach is nice, but from what I read about it, it's really crowded, doesn't sound too Elmo-friendly....Help help help!

As far as TJ goes I don't think it would be a good idea with the little ones. There has been a lot of problems down there and you don't want to be in the wrong place and the wrong time down there. When the drug guys and the police ( which in some cases are the same) decide to shoot it out they don't care who is in the way. You can come back across with a birth certificate but it's really not worth the risk with the kids.

Here is a good link that may help you with the hotels

Here is a link that will give you great information about events, dining and entertainment in the san diego area. There is also a coupon section that may save you a few bucks around town.

Here is another link that may be nice for you and dad

A fun and reasonable trip is to take the Coaster commuter train from downtown up to Oceanside. It's a 50 min. trip and you will see beaches that you could never see from the roads and the kids will love it. When you get to Oceanside it is only two blocks to the longest wood pier on the west coast.

You should really try to take the kids to La Jolla and take them to the childrens pool. It's a protected area that the sea lions call home and it is a big hit with kids of all ages.

Another place you all will enjoy is SeaPort Village. It's a great place to get a little something to eat and let the kids wear themselves out in the grass at the park

Have a great and safe time while you are here and I'm sure you will all enjoy yourselves.

Tijuana info: If your rugrats are US citizens 18 and under all they need is a birth certificate to cross the border.

After 31 Jan 08 any US or Canadian citizen needs to show proof of citizenship such as a photo ID (Drivers license) and a birth certificate to enter the US. You do not need a passport if this applies to you. This applies to driving or walking across the border. If you fly or float in you need a passport

In Balboa Park there is a kids train and carousel next to the Zoo.

Check out the seals at the Children's Pool in La Jolla.

The tide pools in La Jolla are cool for kids also.

There is a carousel in Seaport Village downtown.

This is a great place to fly kites on Embarcadero Marina Park North. There is a kite shop at Seaport Village.

Mission Beach can get crowded and the surf can be rough.

As an alternative go to Bonita Cove or Ventura cove in Mission Bay. They are just inland from Mission Beach and are protected coves with picnic and playground areas.

You need passports for Mexico......If you gonna do the zoo spend the big bucks and get the VIP tour......well worth it. If it the little mans 3rd birthday why does dad want to go to Tijuana?

I honestly would not take the little guy down to TJ.That is not an experience for children.

As far as the zoo you will have a blast! Enter the zoo and take an immediate left. Follow the signs a short distance to the Children's zoo section. It's fantastic! There is a sealion show which takes place in the same area every few hours. Additionally you can see someone talk about bugs. Kids love it. There's face painting, , a huge reptile house, plenty of places to eat. Everything! That will be a day in SD easily.

Another attraction is Sea World up the coast a little ways is LegoLand. Both are kids oriented but adults can have a blast too. Mission Beach has an old wooden roller coaster ride and is well...a beach. A darn good beach!

Hey have a blast, plan for two days and leave one open for whatever. TJ is not Mexico it is a tourist trap. You will be acosted for money from the moment you enter. You will be exposed to health issues throughout Mexico like poor sanitation.

I'd skip TJ and Mission Beach, personally, unless you are going to the wooden roller coaster and Pirate's Cove in Belmont Park, Mission Beach. I'd go to Legoland, Seaworld, the science museum (yes there is enough to do for a three year old) and puppet shows in Balboa Park or the maritime museum (old boats and submarines on the San Diego Bay) before I'd go to either Tijuana or Mission Beach.

Are you kidding ? is it Dad's B-day or the little man's? TJ is a total sh** hole%26amp; not a place for kids @ all.........the Beach is a beautiful place and kids love playing in the sand....

Angie, tell dad to grow up. TJ is no place for kids. Do the zoo and SeaWorld and the beach. Think of the kids on this trip. He can come back later without the kids and act selfishly in TJ if he wants to.
