Help with decorating kids room!?!?

I have a new stepdaughter, age 11, as well as my 2 daughters who are 8 and 11. I recently got married and along with these 3 girls, I also have a stepson. Problem? We have a 3 bedroom home...so my stepson gets his own room, because hes 13...and of course, my hubby and I get our room...that leaves the girls to share a room. Its not a big ordeal because the room is hugh and the 3 beds fit fine. My girls are with us every other week for a week, but his daughter is always with us...her moms not in the picture. My problem is, decorating ideas. I need a theme idea and cheap ideas...like do it yourself things. Any suggestions? I cant really ask them, because they all want something different...NOT POSSIBLE! Please help before I pull my hair out!

Since the girls are getting older, stick to colors rather than a theme. Themes get old fast and they will grow out of it before you know it. They are almost preteens.

Here are some pictures to get you started:

You want to create something girly, but something they wont grow out of. I love the first picture. A set of bunk bed would be great for your situation. The extra bed would be great for sleepovers and such and you would save on floor space by doing two bunk bed rather than 3 regular beds. I also love the black and white portrait of the sisters in the first picture (it would be a great bonding experience to take all your children out in the yard to take some great black and whites like that and then blow it up as a surprise addition to their new room).

Soft pink paired with a bright poppy red is very playful but also more sophisticated than pink and purple.

Hope this helped a little.

Good luck!

Part of me says to lean towards the likes of your step-daughter as she's the one in the room most often, but if you do that, you'll inevitably get the "you like her better than use" speech.

Sooooooooooo, take them the the paint store and let each of them pick out ONE color that they like. Then, just decorate the room in those colors - paint each wall their color if their beds are each on separate walls. No theme per se. Just use color as your theme. Then, find solid or striped or plaid comforters in those colors (or make duvets with fabric in those colors and cover the ones they already have. Will be much easier, and cheaper, to find fabric than to find something ready-made.) I bet you'll be surprised at how well their colors will probably match with each other.

You can also use each of their colors to color-coordinate items - maybe drawer pulls in that color on their drawer in the dresser (or paint the drawer front). Towels in their color to differentiate their bath towels. Liners in baskets or spray paint baskets in their color for them to store their things.

By color coordinating, it gives each of them a sense of individuality and a sense of ownership of items within the room (instead of everything being community property). Solid colors and non-themes will be something they can grow with over the years. You may be able (not sure of the room layout and size) be able to hang sheets from a cable system so they can pull them closed around their bed for privacy. Anything that will give them a sense of having their "own space" will likely appease all 3 of them.

Just try to keep it simple, functional and comfortable for all. And keep in mind that they will outgrowing most kiddie, girly things soon if they haven't already. I have 14 and 12 year old daughters that share a room and I'm sure the number one thing they would say they wanted if I asked them would be a dividing wall :-)

does it have to be a theme? you could just buy them each a multi color comforters (guaranteed to have a color they like in it) and go with pillows to match for the color they choose. ikea, target and walmart all have very cute and inexpensive bedding that would fit their age groups. if they are going to have bedside tables they can each have the stand painted to match the color of their pillows, but each have the same lamp shade. maybe some cute pics that can be downloaded and placed in frames that you can buy to match the bedding or buy them cheap and paint them yourselves. good luck!

first...sit down the girls...make them part of this decision. ask them what "They" like...it's their room and they have to sleep there, so let's make it for them!.

so let's say they all want something different. Great... you have 3 or 4 walls to work with, each wall could be a different color, with their theme. One wall could be pink with cats, another blue with disney and the last green with flowers...whatever makes them happy.

after doing the walls, just decorate their spaces around them, so that each girl has her own area and feels special....buy cheap rugs at walmart, and place them next to their beds...again one could be pink, one green, one blue or whatever....

as for the curtains....you could use blinds (neutral color) and just put up a fun valance.

You can also buy wall stickers, and puffy paint and glitter at the craft and fabric stores. I actually bought puffy paint glitter and star stickers...i created a rainbow on the wall with stars around it ....the project was probably 24" x 24"...not very large...but cute and able to be covered up with regular paint later on.

Good luck...and just remember: include the girls and HAVE FUN!

Well I am weird and would let them each pick a color (that matched of coarse) and paint their own section IE: Red White Blue. Purple Blue Yellow. Another idea if this is to crazy is to tack ribbon in criss crosses to make a photo wall girls love to hang pictures of friends and boys up and it can be something for each of them. I had a friend that had twins girls who did a half and half room one was a girly girl and one was a jock so it was pink and purple vs. blue and red it was still very cute and the girls loved being able to show their different sides. Well good luck and have fun with this!!!
