Watch out, my husband did that and then he found out that they don't give the kids the wigs, they SELL them at a high price so that most kids can't afford these "donations".

Donated hair has to be at leat 12" long and preferably virgin. You could always shave what you have for danations though.

locks of love donates long hair to make whigs. just look them up on yahoo, fill out their paper, and go to any salon. they will put your hair in a ponytail and then chop it off. then you or the salon will need to send the hair to locks of love by mail. they explain everything on the website. good luck.

Several of my friends have donated to Locks of Love. However, they have very specific requirements for the hair length. Please see here for a detailed description about cutting and sending the hair...

you have to have at least 10 inches in a ponytail to cut...you don't have to go bald either. the program is called "locks of love". call hairdressers and see if they know anything about it and look it up online. i think you can just mail it to them.

These are the guidelines for donating hair to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that helps children who has lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Their web address is:

www.locksoflove.org

We accept 10" minimum hair length (tip to tip). We cannot accept wigs, falls, or synthetic hair.

Please bundle hair in ponytail or braid.

Hair needs to be clean, dry, placed in a plastic bag, then padded envelope.

We need hair from men and women, young and old, all colors and races.

Hair may be colored or permed, but not bleached or chemically damaged (if unsure, ask your stylist).

Hair swept off the floor is not usable.

Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.

Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated from the ponytails and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.

You may pull curly hair straight to measure the minimum 10".

The majority of all hair donated comes from children who wish to help other children.

Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails for donation.

Please note: Anyone can cut your hair as long as the above guidelines are followed.

I think they need a minimum of 6 to 8 inches to do the wigs ,

Is your hair shoulder length ?

Go for it! Sounds like a good cause. It may be the best thing for your heath to cut all your hair off and let it all grow back in. There is alot of germs and bacteria that get build up over the years that you just can't see with all that hair covering it up. Then again you might see alot more than you planned on- and it's all out there for public viewing. From a health standpoint it is a good idea. You can see if you have any unusual bumps or skin irritations. Calcium deposits. All this stuff is masked by a thick head of hair. Guys that think they are going bald in certain spots will shave their heads and let it grow back. Some shave their heads because their have receded hair lines and it looks more even with all the hair removed from the head. I suppose totally bald looks better than a big thin spot and a combover.

Contact http://www.locksoflove.org/ to donate your hair. My grandaughter donated her hair a couple of years ago. It is a great organization, and most beauty shops know how to cut the hair and prepare it for donation.

Good luck

Check into the authenticity of where you'd like to donate, first. Some organizations are known to actually sell the hair that has been donated.

Second, most salons will cut your hair (usually free of charge) and they will donate it "for" you... so call some salons and ask if they do this.

Third, I saw some people mentioned already, your hair must be in nice shape (not dyed or permed) and usually quite long in order to donate.

Either way, good for you for considering this, thanks for being such a stand up person. Good luck!

Please do NOT donate your hair to "Locks of Love". They are a complete scam ! Check out give.org's take on them:

http://www.give.org/reports/care2_dyn.as...

Locks of love made only 113 wigs in an entire year, they SELL the majority of the hair received (for extensions) and they do not allow for independent auditing of their financial records. Who knows where the money from selling hair really goes to, somebody's pocket perhaps ?

A lot of hair doesn't even make it Locks of Love, type in "human hair ponytail" on EBay and look at all those listings. That hair is being sold to hair fet*shists.

If you don't mind your hair ending up on Paris Hilton's back or sold to a pervert though ....... go ahead and "donate"

HI, I ASKED TWO QUESTIONS ON LOCKS OF LOVE, TOO. I DID LOOK INTO THIS ORGANIZATION HEAVILY FOR MY TWO DAUGHTERS AGES 7 AND 5 TO DONATE. THE ANSWER BY "DUDE" IS CORRECT WITH WHAT HE SAID. LOOK INTO WIGS FOR KIDS INSTEAD. THEY GIVE TO KIDS WITH CANCER NOT JUST ALOPECIA. LOCKS ALSO DOESN'T LET ANYONE VIEW THEIR BOOKS AND RESELLS MOST HAIR.

DON'T LET THE HAIR BE RESOLD, CHECK OUT "WIGS FOR KIDS"

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.
