My mother experienced hair loss on her crown and at her hairline when she was 19/20. So am I! What i

She said she never fully regained her former fullness, and kids at her college called her "bald' because her parts were clearly visible. I am suffering the same thing, being male, I was worried it was only a harbinger of things to come. However, it has not progressed into male pattern baldness; just a pervasive thin head of hair on top. What could it be? Our family has a history of thyroid issues...could that play a part?

It sounds like you and your Mom have some hair thinning that is hereditary. I would go to a doctor to find out just for your peace of mind. The thyroid problems could be part of it too.

well since it runs in your family it must be genetic..in which case i don't think there's a whole lot that you can do about it,

I'm not a doctor but I am a hairstylist. The most common reason for hair loss in either gender is genetics. Yup you guessed it you inherited this from someone in your family and well there is not much to do about this. The only things that combat hair loss are surgery, (like the Bosley institute), a drug like rogaine, (effects vary), or hair pieces, (wigs extensions). You may be able to get away with using some volumizing products to help camouflage the areas but that is just a temporary fix.

The other way that you may experience hair loss is due to a medical condition (thyroid issues have been known to induce hair loss), or a side effect from a prescription drug. If you feel that this may be the case I advise you to seek a professional for help.

I wish I could have been more help. Best of luck!
